A Lightning Arrester (LA) is a crucial safety device installed in solar power systems to protect sensitive components like panels and inverters from high-voltage surges caused by direct lightning strikes or nearby grid fluctuations. It safely redirects dangerous electrical surges into the earth without interrupting your power supply.

Operational Continuity: Eliminates prolonged system downtime caused by electrical faults during the stormy or rainy seasons.
Secondary Surge Defense: Even if lightning does not strike your property directly, a nearby strike can cause power surges to travel through the power lines, which the LA diverts.
Air Terminals (Rod): Placed at the highest points of your solar structure (or building roof) to act as the first point of contact for a lightning strike.
Surge Protection Devices (SPDs): Installed inside the array combiner boxes or inverters to handle localized electromagnetic interference and induced voltage spikes.
Earthing & Grounding: The arrester must be connected to a dedicated, robust earthing system (typically using copper) to dissipate the massive electrical charge deep into the soil.
Placement: The LA should cover the entire zone of the solar array, usually via a designated air-termination mast or multiple rods.
Separation: The LA must be bonded to the main building earth but kept at a safe physical and electrical distance from the DC/AC solar cables to prevent arcing.
Regular Checks: Since lightning arresters absorb immense energy, they degrade over time and must be inspected following severe weather events.
